Blossom End Rot Explained (It's Not a Disease — Here's the Fix)

Blossom end rot is one of the most misunderstood problems in the vegetable garden, mostly because its most common fix — "add more calcium" — is usually wrong. The black, leathery, sunken patch that forms on the blossom end (bottom) of tomatoes, peppers, and squash is a physiological disorder, not an infection, and in most gardens the soil already has plenty of calcium. The real problem is almost always delivery, not supply.

What's Actually Happening

Calcium moves through a plant exclusively via water, through the xylem, and it moves slowly. When water uptake is inconsistent — a dry week followed by heavy watering, or irregular rainfall — the fastest-growing parts of the fruit (the blossom end) can be starved of calcium even while the roots are sitting in calcium-rich soil. The plant simply couldn't move it there fast enough.

This is why blossom end rot often appears seemingly out of nowhere on a plant that looked completely healthy the week before, especially after a stretch of erratic weather.

Why "Just Add Calcium" Usually Doesn't Fix It

Most native and amended garden soils already contain sufficient calcium. Dumping crushed eggshells or calcium spray on the leaves treats a supply problem that, in the large majority of cases, doesn't exist. The actual bottleneck is water consistency, so that's where the fix needs to happen.

The Real Fix: Consistent Watering

  • Water deeply and on a consistent schedule — aim for 1-2 inches per week, delivered evenly rather than in one heavy soak followed by several dry days.
  • Mulch heavily (2-3 inches of straw or shredded leaves) to buffer soil moisture swings between waterings and rain events.
  • Consider drip irrigation on a timer if inconsistent watering has been a recurring issue — this removes human error from the equation entirely.
  • Avoid heavy nitrogen fertilization during fruit set, since rapid leafy growth competes with fruit for available calcium.

When a Soil Test Is Actually Worth Doing

If you've corrected watering consistency and blossom end rot continues across multiple fruit and multiple plants, a genuine calcium (or more often, a pH) deficiency becomes more plausible. Very acidic soils (below pH 5.5) can bind calcium in a form roots can't access, in which case a soil test and a lime amendment (which raises pH and adds calcium together) is the right move — but this is the exception, not the first response.

Blossom end rot affecting only the first 1-2 fruit clusters of the season, then disappearing on later fruit, is extremely common and usually just reflects the plant establishing consistent root uptake as it matures. Don't over-correct based on early fruit alone.

Can You Eat Affected Fruit?

Yes — cut away the affected bottom portion and the rest of the fruit is perfectly safe and unaffected in flavor. It's a physiological issue local to the blossom end, not a pathogen that spreads through the fruit's flesh.
