Comprehensive Guide to Tomato Blight Treatment: Save Your Wilting Vines
A wilting tomato vine in midsummer is one of the most demoralising sights for any gardener. Leaves yellow from the bottom up, dark concentric rings appear on lower foliage, and within a week a once-thriving plant can collapse. In nine cases out of ten the culprit is blight — either early blight (Alternaria solani) or late blight (Phytophthora infestans). The good news: both are treatable if you catch them early. This guide walks you through identification, immediate triage, and a recovery protocol our agronomy team uses in real vegetable plots.
1. Early Blight vs. Late Blight: Tell Them Apart First
The two diseases look superficially similar but have very different trajectories. Early blight is slow, opportunistic, and almost always starts on lower leaves. Late blight is explosive — it can take a healthy plant down in 4–6 days and spreads to neighbouring plants by spore.
- Early blight: small brown spots with concentric 'target' rings, surrounded by a yellow halo. Lower leaves first. Stems show dark sunken lesions.
- Late blight: irregular grey-green water-soaked patches that turn brown overnight. White fuzz on leaf undersides in humid weather. Fruit develops greasy brown lesions.

2. The 48-Hour Triage Protocol
Whichever blight you're dealing with, the first 48 hours determine whether you save the plant. Work in this order:
- Prune every infected leaf. Disinfect shears with 70% isopropyl between cuts. Bag the trimmings — never compost blighted material.
- Improve airflow. Stake or cage vines so no leaf touches another, and remove suckers below the first flower truss.
- Mulch heavily with straw or shredded leaves. Most blight spores splash up from soil during rain or watering.
- Switch to ground-level drip irrigation. Overhead watering keeps foliage wet and is the single biggest accelerator.
- Apply a fungicide (see below) within 24 hours of pruning, then again 7 days later.
3. Choosing the Right Spray
For organic gardens, two products do 95% of the work. We list both in our shop and recommend cycling between them so the pathogen does not develop resistance.
Copper Fungicide (e.g. Bonide Copper Spray)
OMRI-listed copper octanoate is highly effective against early blight, late blight, and bacterial spot. Spray to runoff on a dry, calm evening. Reapply every 7–10 days, or after heavy rain. Stop applications 1 day before harvest.
Bacillus subtilis Biofungicide (e.g. Serenade)
A living bacterial culture that out-competes pathogenic fungi on the leaf surface. Gentler than copper, safe up to the day of harvest, and excellent as a preventive between copper sprays.
Field Note
Alternate copper and Bacillus every 7 days for 3 weeks. Resistance management matters even with organic products.
4. Recovery: Bringing the Vine Back
Once new growth emerges clean from the pruning, your plant has turned the corner. Side-dress with a balanced organic fertiliser — top-dress with worm castings or feed weekly with diluted fish emulsion. Pinch the growing tip 4 weeks before your first frost date so the plant ripens existing fruit instead of producing new ones.
5. Preventing Blight Next Season
- Rotate crops — never plant tomatoes, potatoes, peppers or eggplant in the same bed two years running.
- Choose resistant cultivars: 'Defiant', 'Mountain Magic', 'Iron Lady' tolerate late blight; 'Mountain Fresh Plus' resists early blight.
- Start spraying a preventive Bacillus program at the first flower, not at first symptom.
- Clear all tomato debris in autumn. Spores overwinter on dead foliage.
- Mulch at transplant time. Bare soil is the primary spore-splash vector.
Blight is rarely a death sentence when you act fast. Diagnose accurately, prune ruthlessly, spray on schedule, and the same vines that looked finished in July will deliver a strong second flush by September.
